Icelandic Independence Day

Monday, the 17th of June, was Iceland's independence day. This is a pretty big deal in Iceland, so I decided to go downtown to see what everything was about. After walking around for a while looking for a lopapeysa (traditional icelandic sweater), I stopped by to say hello to the LDS missionaries and soon got suckered into helping paint faces at their stand (aka, I don't know how to face paint so it was quite the humiliation-fest). Six and half hours later, without any breaks and with a back that felt like it had been hit by a bus, we were done... as was pretty much everything else.

Bummer.

I did manage to snap just a couple shots before my day got face painted away.
This is the first Icelandic flag I've ever painted on someone's face... aaaaand you can tell. And don't even remind me of the bazillion Spidermans, Hello Kitty, monkey, hamster, and princess kids requested. WTF? I did, however, get to paint a zombie face. It was awesome.
The BEST thing about this day (since I've been a bit of a Debbie Downer) was finding my Icelandic sweater at last! I've been wanting one since I got here, but didn't find one that motivated me enough to purchase it. I had a criteria, you see. I wanted one with a zipper, a hood, and I wanted to meet the knitter. I found all three and feel very cozy about my decision. BIG thank you to H and SJ for the gift card birthday present that made it possible. You guys are the best.
